Is there is a way to “trick” the N/render into correctly interpretting an added customDataSource such that it interprets the FreeMarker ${….@label} tag correctly?

Such as ${record.total@label}

I tried adding an additional label key explicitly like
var customObj = { 'total@label' : "test label" }
to my custom object that is aliased as “record” but this threw and Unexpected Error when it was trying to render the xml string into PDF
