Use Custom Reports for KPIs

Is there a way to use custom reports as the basis for a KPI?

I know some of the native KPIs are based on reports (e.g. Inventory KPI), because when you click on the balance number it will take you to the report behind it. However, when I try to create a custom KPI, I can’t get reports to be on the list. It seems like you can only use searches.

It’s unfortunate if that’s the case, because you can get certain historical data easier, like account balances, on a report than a search.

Only searches. You can get creative with dates and “on or before” windows for seeing account balances in KPIs

You’re saying you can set the date range in the KPI as “on or before”? Because I’m not seeing it. If so, that would be huge. I have a transaction search that replicates the A/P register, showing all transactions that debit/credit it and the sum total equaling the current balance. But the problem is to compare balances (e.g. this month vs. last month) with a KPI, I would need the date range criteria to be “on or before today” and the comparison to be last month to date. I haven’t found a way to do this.

Instead, I’ve made a script that essentially takes a daily snapshot of the account balance and stores it in a custom record. Then I can search the custom record. This allows me to use the KPI to see an average balance over a date range.
