RE: Service items as project tasks
Here is the case:
- We make a sales order that includes multiple service items. Service items are always fixed priced, not hour-based.
- We want to create a project based on the sales order and transfer the service items from sales order to project tasks. So service item equals to a project task.
- Workers track time to project tasks. These are used in project profitability reports as costs. When task is ready, it is market as completed.
- When task is ready, it should automatically be generated to invoice.
So. We know there is milestone based invoicing and we have tried it. Problem is that our project structure is kind of difficult, there is always at least 50 tasks and up to couple hundred. It would be hard to do 200 milestone rules. Every project is different so template is not also an option.
We haven’t figured it out how to move the service items as tasks. Or when creating new task, we could just pick a service item instead of writing the task name manually. There should also be link between project task and sales order and we haven’t found a way how to do it.
Do you have any idea how to do this? Most important things are to get service items to tasks in projects and then automate the invoicing somehow. Thanks for helping.
If your tasks are more dynamic, and therefore project templates won’t work, you can use the project tasks import process. It’s different than the standard import process, and has a lot more issues/limitations than the standard CSV import process (e.g. you can’t run an update import, and you can’t save your mapping), but it’s okay for initial setup, if things are pretty much set in stone after that point.
